I was sitting here watching T.V. and all of a sudden I felt a burden and worry sweep over me. It was like all of a sudden I realized how temporal the things we depend on are. Jobs, money, government; it’s all temporary. Many people are learning how quickly a job can be lost, currencies and governments collapse, it’s all temporary. So what is your source? I started praying and decided to read my bible, which I haven’t been doing on a regular basis. I kind of did that super spiritual practice of opening the bible and reading whatever flops open. I knew Psalms would probably have a word of comfort so I opened my bible somewhere in the middle, and started to read.
They cried out to the Lord and in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
That’s a pretty good start so I went back and read the whole chapter. Example after example God delivers those who cry out to him, the homeless, the hungry & thirsty, and those in bondage were all delivered. This passage also says that these people were bound “because they had rebelled against God’s commands”and God “used suffering to humble them”. I’m afraid what is happening in America is paralleling parts of this chapter. We will be bound because of our rebellion, and we will be humbled with suffering unless we cry out to God to deliver us. Read even our recent history and we can see the road we’re going down. We could be heading to some very humbling times. This honestly is one of the only things in the world that concerns me. But at the same time I’ve not been that concerned about it until tonight. I think God was shaking me awake, asking me ‘what is my source?’ If I answer honestly based on my past actions, I have been my source. Tonight I cried out to God to be my source. I cried out to God that we wouldn’t need to be bound or humbled, instead, like Nineveh, we would hear the word of God, repent and the judgement of God would pass over us.
I think it’s time for the church in North America to be shaken awake, to realize God as their source before it’s too late. Jobs will be lost, currency and government will eventually collapse (they all have in the past). God has been an unwavering source of provision since the beginning. He provided for the children of Israel for 40 years in the desert, He gave Joseph wisdom so Egypt would survive seven years of famine, He provided all the needs of George Muller and his orphanages, and so much more. If we cry out to God, He can provide for our needs today too.
