…You who preach against stealing, do you steal? 2:22 You who tell others not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 2:23 You who boast inthe law dishonor God by transgressing the law! 2:24 For just as it is written, “the name of God is being blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
This passage is from Romans 2 in a section titled ‘Condemnation of the Jews’. As a Christian this is another passage that speaks to us about the severity of hypocrisy. We’ve got to realize that whether people really understand Christianity or not, they do understand that Christians claim to be moral, law following, upstanding citizens. Whether or not you speak out against anything, just calling yourself a Christian means your actions should line up with the Bible. I know people who have been stolen from and lied to by vocal Christians, “you can trust me I’m a Christian”, “I don’t lie I go to church every Sunday”, “I swear to God…”. These people who have been burned in the past are now leery and untrusting of these vocal Christians.
This passage may have been written about the Jews, but it is completely applicable to Christianity. I’ve read all too many times that people aren’t interested in Christianity because of hypocrisy (real or perceived) in the church. Are you a hypocrite in any area? If you are a hypocrite you are causing God’s name to be blasphemed! That is no small accusation.
